Milestone Birthdays

No, I did not say headstone, but milestone. Amazing how we wait until we reach a milestone birthday to reflect on our achievements or rather lack there of. Think about how many people consider this the time to start jotting down skydiving, college degrees, buying a corvette, etc. when most people observing would consider that too late to truly enjoy the aforementioned activities. How many times have you seen that balding, over-aged, hawaiian print wearing corvette driver whizzing by? I think we should try to get as many accomplishments done while we truly have the capacity to enjoy them, and accept the fact that when we reach 50 that the penis enlarger just won't work.

Milestones? Like that one coming in 2008 when the Chicago Cubs hit the century mark in futility? I can give you a list of 40 or so guys who should consider skydiving or getting a college degree. Just click on "Roster" at chicagocubs.com.

Of course you aware of the marketing motherlode by having the moniker of "lovable losers?" When is the last time the Tigers broke the top ten of sports franchises who brought in the most money? I implore you to consider the fact that even though our beloved Cubbies may not have earned the golden ring, but they ended up with the platinum consolation prize of gobs of cash which is what it is all about in the end, my friend. Considering that the Tigers - Cards series ended up with the lowest ratings of all time, I'm willing to go out on a limb in saying that their market value will remain in the cellar along with their hopes of a world series ring, at least until the Cubs make it. Amen, Baby!!!

Lou,

Maybe the Cubs, or the Tribune Company, or Sammy Sosa, or even Kerry Wood have the consolation prize of gobs of cash. But where does that leave their poor displaced fandom? Lovable or not, I think we've found the real losers!

What you fail to grasp is the essence of mankind. All things come down to hope. We love to root for the underdog in hopes that someday the downtrodden will overcome. The Cubs allow people to hope for that one day to reach the pinnacle of baseball success. In the meantime, they are rewarded day after day with hard work, integrity, and delicious ballpark peanuts with the Cubs logo emblazoned on the package.

Hope springs eternal!

When considering the Cubs and Hope, I believe it is somewhat symbolic that when I rode in the elevator with Bob Hope, the car was going down.

Like Bob Hope, the Tigers chances are . . . gone. Now let's look at the laws of probability. There's a very likely chance that after years of futility that the Cubs are more than capable of going all the way. Much more likely that they'll score than you!

Yes, the law of averages would indicate that the Cubs will win the World Series any year now. However, any kind of trend analysis would show that the Cubs, much like the American made television, are well on their way to oblivion.

I believe the transition in manufacturing of TVs has been a positive change. We are now benefiting from advances in technology where we have thinner, clearer, and less expensive technology than our forebears. Imagine the old Zeniths of yesterday with their questionable quality and large consoles that would house inferior materials.

I liken that change to the future of the Cubs franchise where they are considering the addition of a legendary Japanese pitcher. Soon the Far East influence will enable a World Series flag to finally fly over our legendary Wrigley Field! E Plurbius Unum!

More likely the Cubs will simply fade away into nothingness while the Yomiuri Giants take the Cubs place in the National League. Of course, they'll have to be placed in the East Division.

If that occurs, I'm hoping the food would be better than ball park franks. Perhaps, we could get some delicious sushi as we see the sultans of swing!

Nathan Kinzel said...

I don't think the Cubs will ever be Sultans of Swing because they're always in Dire Straits.

MrHuge2U said...

Maybe, but with all those groupies chasing them and their million dollar salaries for 3 months of work, they get money for nothing and the chicks are free.

Sounds to me like they're just doing the walk of life.

They're just trying to leave their Mark, Knopfler less.
